COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the theatre program at Acadia, students follow a balanced and engaging course schedule designed to build foundational knowledge and practical skills in theatre while enhancing their critical thinking and communication abilities. During the first semester, students take Introduction to Theatre (THEA 1483), which provides an overview of theatre history, theory, and practice. They also enroll in Introduction to Production (THEA 2823/33), where they begin hands-on experience with backstage and technical aspects of theatre. Writing & Reading Critically courses (ENGL 1483–1493 or ENGL 1413) help develop strong analytical and communication skills essential for academic success. Students also study a language other than English (LANG XX13) to broaden their cultural perspectives and take an introductory humanities course (HUM XX13) to complement their artistic education. In the second semester, students continue with Introduction to Production (THEA 2823/33) to deepen their practical theatre knowledge. They also take an introductory social sciences course (SSCI XX13), advancing their understanding of societal contexts that influence theatre. Writing & Reading Critically courses continue (ENGL 1483–93 or ENGL 1423), alongside a higher-level language course (LANG XX23) and another introductory humanities course (HUM XX23). This comprehensive first-year curriculum equips theatre students with the critical, creative, and practical skills needed for success in both academic and professional theatre settings.
