COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the history program at Acadia University, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts, methods, and themes that shape the study of history. The program requires students to complete nine credit-hours of history courses at the 1000 level, including the core course HIST 1003 and an additional six credit-hours of introductory history classes. These courses provide a strong foundation by exploring significant historical events, periods, and approaches to understanding the past. The aim is to develop students’ analytical and critical thinking skills, along with their ability to communicate effectively through writing and discussion. Alongside the required history courses, students must also complete 21 credit-hours of electives, offering them the opportunity to explore subjects beyond history or to deepen their study within other areas of interest. These electives can be chosen from a broad range of disciplines and are offered throughout the fall and winter semesters. Most courses carry three credit-hours, while some full-year courses offer six credit-hours, allowing for flexibility in course planning. This structure provides students with the chance to shape a personalized academic experience that suits their interests and career goals. The first-year curriculum balances the study of history with opportunities to engage in diverse fields, encouraging students to develop a broad understanding of the world. The program also prepares students for advanced study by equipping them with key research skills and a critical perspective on historical knowledge. Students who pursue history often find that the skills they acquire are applicable to a wide range of professions, including education, law, journalism, government, and business.
