COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the German program at Acadia University, students build a solid foundation in both language and academic skills through a carefully structured combination of courses. In the first semester, students take GERM 1013 – Introduction to German 1, where they begin developing basic proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Alongside this, they enroll in ENGL 1413 – Writing & Reading Critically 1 to strengthen academic writing and analytical thinking. The semester also includes three additional introductory courses: one each in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, allowing students to explore a broad range of disciplines. In the second semester, students continue their language development in GERM 1023 – Introduction to German 2, advancing their communication skills and cultural understanding. ENGL 1423 – Writing & Reading Critically 2 further refines their writing and interpretive skills. The semester is rounded out with second-level introductory courses in humanities, social sciences, and sciences, deepening their interdisciplinary exposure. This first-year curriculum is designed to support linguistic growth while fostering critical thinking and academic versatility, all within Acadia’s personalized, small-class environment. By the end of the year, students are well-prepared to continue with more advanced studies in German language and culture, as well as in their chosen complementary fields.
