COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the English program at Acadia University is designed to introduce students to critical reading and writing while providing a broad liberal arts foundation. In the first semester, students take Writing & Reading Critically (ENGL 1483–93 or ENGL 1413), where they develop skills in analyzing texts closely and expressing ideas clearly and persuasively. Alongside this, students study a language other than English to enhance their linguistic abilities and cultural awareness. They also enroll in introductory courses across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, fostering an interdisciplinary perspective essential to understanding literature in its wider social and cultural contexts. The second semester continues to build on these foundations with further Writing & Reading Critically courses (ENGL 1483–93 or ENGL 1423), encouraging more advanced analytical and communication skills. Students continue their study of a second language and select additional introductory courses in humanities, social sciences, and sciences to maintain a well-rounded academic experience. This broad approach enables students to explore different ways of thinking and communicating, which are vital to literary studies. The first year prepares students to engage deeply with a variety of literary genres, periods, and cultures as they progress through the program. By balancing focused English courses with a diverse array of electives, students gain the tools to think critically and write effectively. This foundation supports later specialization in topics such as creative writing, literary history, or cultural studies. Ultimately, the first year at Acadia’s English program nurtures a strong intellectual curiosity and communication proficiency, equipping students to excel both academically and in future professional environments.
