COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Bachelor of Arts in Economics program at Acadia University is designed to build a solid foundation in economic principles while developing essential academic skills across multiple disciplines. In the first semester, students begin with Microeconomic Principles (ECON 1013), where they learn about the behavior of individuals and firms, market dynamics, and the basics of supply and demand. Alongside economics, students take Writing & Reading Critically 1 (ENGL 1413), a course that strengthens their communication skills through critical analysis of texts and structured writing assignments. Mathematics plays an important role in economics, so students take General Linear Algebra and Calculus for Economics and Business (MATH 1613), which equips them with quantitative tools for economic analysis. To broaden their education, students also study a language other than English and take an introductory humanities course, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and cultural awareness. In the second semester, students advance to Macroeconomic Principles (ECON 1023), which focuses on the performance and policies of entire economies, including topics such as inflation, unemployment, and economic growth. Writing & Reading Critically 2 (ENGL 1423) continues to refine students’ analytical and writing abilities, preparing them for more complex economic arguments. The curriculum also includes an introductory science course and a continuation of language studies, along with another humanities course, ensuring students develop a well-rounded academic perspective. This diverse mix of courses helps students sharpen critical thinking and communication skills, laying the groundwork for upper-year economics studies and potential double majors. The first-year program balances rigorous economic theory with broad liberal arts education, helping students become adaptable, informed thinkers prepared to tackle complex economic issues in academic, professional, and real-world contexts.
