ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Acadia University is a public, primarily undergraduate institution located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. Established in 1838 as Queen’s College and later renamed Acadia College in 1841, it was created by Nova Scotia Baptists to provide theological and general education. It became Acadia University in 1891 and gradually expanded its academic scope. The university offers over 200 degree combinations through its faculties of Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Professional Studies, and Theology, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1 and average class size of 28. It also offers some graduate programs at the master’s and one at the doctoral level, overseen by the Division of Research & Graduate Studies. Acadia is known for its research in coastal environments, climate change, and data analytics, and hosts more than 15 research centres. The university launched the Acadia Advantage initiative in 1996, integrating technology into undergraduate education and earning national and international recognition, including from the Smithsonian Institution. The university campus includes features like the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, Acadia University Archives, and an art gallery. Acadia was affiliated with the Canadian Baptists until 1966 but still retains historical ties through board representation. Acadia has ranked highly among primarily undergraduate universities in Canada, consistently appearing in Maclean’s rankings. Its infrastructure includes heritage properties like Emmerson Hall and Horton Hall, reflecting its long-standing presence in Canadian higher education.
