COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) STEM at Western Sydney University is a postgraduate qualification designed to prepare graduates for teaching careers in secondary school STEM education. The program consists of 120 credit points of core subjects that build strong foundations in pedagogy, educational psychology, inclusive education, literacy and numeracy, and STEM-specific teaching practices. Key core areas include STEM Foundations, Educational Psychology for Learning and Teaching, Pedagogy for Positive Learning Environments, Digital Literacies in Education, Aboriginal and Culturally Responsive Pedagogies, and Creating Inclusive Classrooms. Students also complete Professional Experience 1 and 2, which provide supervised classroom teaching practice in real school environments, along with community engagement and research-focused learning through STEM education inquiry. These components ensure graduates develop both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching competence. In addition, students complete 40 credit points of Alternate Subjects, which include Curriculum 1 and Curriculum 2 units in Mathematics, Science, or Technology depending on NESA subject requirements and prior academic background. Students with a single teaching area also undertake additional applied STEM subjects such as Applied Robotics and Programming and Applied Mathematics and Science to strengthen their discipline expertise. Overall, the program integrates academic study with extensive practical experience to develop confident, capable, and reflective STEM educators who meet NSW accreditation standards and are prepared to teach in diverse secondary school settings.
