COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) at Western Sydney University is a 160-credit-point postgraduate program designed to prepare graduates for professional practice in early childhood education settings. The program is entirely core-based and provides comprehensive training in child development, pedagogy, curriculum design, and leadership in early learning environments. Students study key areas such as Creative Teaching and Learning, Children’s Learning and Development, Diverse Literacies, Children, Families and Communities, Play, Health and Wellbeing, and Early Learning Environments. The curriculum also emphasises inclusive and culturally responsive education through subjects like Aboriginal Education: Past, Present and Future and Inclusive Pedagogies. Literacy and numeracy foundations are developed through Literacy Connections and Working Mathematically units, ensuring graduates can support holistic child development across learning domains. Professional capability is strengthened through Leadership and Management and Pedagogical Leadership: Critically Reflective Practice. A major feature of the program is its extensive professional experience component, including supervised placements in Birth–2 and 3–5 year settings through Professional Experience subjects. These placements allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real early childhood environments and develop practical teaching skills. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong pedagogical knowledge, reflective practice abilities, and professional experience to become confident, competent, and socially responsible early childhood educators.
