COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Psychotherapy and Counselling is a 160-credit-point postgraduate program designed to provide comprehensive training in therapeutic practice, counselling theory, and clinical application. The program is fully core-based and follows a structured sequence of subjects that progressively build professional competence in psychotherapy. It begins with foundational studies such as Foundations of Psychotherapy and Counselling 1 and 2, which introduce key theories, principles, and approaches to counselling practice. Students also study Ethics and Diversity in Counselling to develop a strong understanding of professional responsibility and culturally responsive practice. Core integrated practice units such as Integrated Practice 1: Self and Story and Integrated Practices 2, 3, and 4 focus on personal development, therapeutic presence, emotional awareness, and relational dynamics within counselling. The program also includes Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice and multiple Clinical Studies units, which provide supervised, practice-oriented learning experiences to develop applied therapeutic skills. Practising Research and Researching Practice strengthens students’ ability to integrate research into clinical work and evaluate therapeutic approaches critically. Advanced units such as Further Clinical Studies in Psychotherapy and Counselling deepen clinical competence and professional readiness. Overall, the structure is designed to ensure graduates develop strong theoretical foundations, reflective practice skills, ethical awareness, and clinical capability required for professional counselling and psychotherapy practice in diverse mental health and community settings.
