COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Planning is a 160-credit-point postgraduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge and professional capability in urban and regional planning. The curriculum is fully core-based and focuses on preparing students for leadership roles in planning practice, policy development, and urban management. It integrates historical, theoretical, environmental, social, and regulatory dimensions of planning to provide a comprehensive understanding of how cities and regions are shaped and governed. Key subjects include Managing Cities: History and Theory, Planning and Environmental Regulation, Heritage and Planning, and Planning and Development Control, which build foundational knowledge of planning systems and governance structures. Students also study Developing Sustainable Places and Cool Green Cities, which focus on sustainability, environmental design, and climate-responsive urban development. The program includes strong emphasis on research and analytical skills through subjects such as Social Research in the Digital World, Introduction to Social Research, and Urban Research Report. Practical and industry-focused learning is provided through Urban Planning Placement Project and topics such as Urban Management Practice and Financing Cities in the Global Economy, which connect planning theory with real-world application. Additional subjects such as Health, Wellbeing and Place, Interpreting Building Regulations, and Planning for Bushfire Prone Areas ensure graduates are prepared to address complex environmental, social, and regulatory challenges in contemporary planning practice.
