COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Humanitarian and Development Studies is a 160-credit-point postgraduate program designed to prepare students for professional roles in humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and international development practice. The program is structured into core and alternate components, with pathways that vary depending on entry level. The core component includes 80 credit points of essential subjects that provide a strong foundation in social research, development theory, and applied humanitarian knowledge. Key subjects include Introduction to Social Research, Public Health in Complex Emergencies, Political Economy of Development, International Disaster Management, Development and Security, Global Health, Migration and Development, Humanitarian and Development Agendas and Progress, and Management and Evaluation of Aid Programs. These units equip students with critical analytical skills and a deep understanding of global development challenges. All students also complete 40 credit points of alternate study through either a Social Science Research Project or a Social Science Training Placement, providing opportunities for applied learning or research experience. In addition, students in the 2-year entry pathway complete a further 40 credit points of electives from a range of interdisciplinary subjects such as Economics, Governance and Social Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Development, Digital Marketing, Social Marketing, Communication and Media Research, Global Interactions, Policy Translation, and Philosophy of Politics. Overall, the program develops skilled professionals capable of working effectively in complex humanitarian and development environments worldwide.
