COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) (Zoology) at Western Sydney University (Program 3754) is a 240 credit point AQF Level 7 degree structured to combine core scientific training, specialised major study, and flexible elective learning. The program requires completion of core science subjects (including foundational units such as scientific literacy and introductory chemistry), followed by a chosen testamur major in Animal Science and Zoology. Students complete eight major subjects (or twelve in certain specialisations), covering animal biology, behaviour, health, welfare, nutrition, reproduction, and human–animal interactions, alongside zoological studies in ecology, evolution, physiology, and biodiversity. The curriculum integrates both theoretical and practical learning, with strong emphasis on laboratory work, fieldwork, and real-world application using university animal facilities and external industry partners such as zoos, wildlife parks, farms, and conservation organisations. In addition to the major, students complete 80 credit points of elective study, which may be used to undertake a second major, minors, or additional interdisciplinary subjects such as conservation science, microbiology, or environmental health. The program also requires 60 credit points at Level 3 or above to ensure advanced disciplinary depth. Depending on major selection, students may undertake specialised or compulsory components such as field-based training or applied research units. Overall, the curriculum is designed to develop strong scientific, analytical, and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in zoology, animal science, conservation, research, wildlife management, and related biological science fields.
