COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Humanitarian and Development Studies is a 240-credit-point program structured to provide students with a strong foundation in social sciences, humanitarian studies, and practical field experience. The course includes 80 credit points of core subjects that focus on research methods, ethics, human rights, social change, Indigenous Australian perspectives, social diversity, and understanding society and human behaviour. Core units such as Applied Social Research, Ethics in the Social Sciences, Human Rights, Peace and Development, and Researching towards Social Change help students develop critical thinking, analytical, and research skills relevant to humanitarian and development work. Students are also required to complete an 80-credit-point major in Humanitarian and Development Studies, which provides specialised knowledge in disaster management, humanitarian response, and sustainable development practices. In addition, the program offers 80 credit points of elective subjects, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. Students may use electives to complete a recommended minor, such as Social Sciences International Placement, which enhances practical and global experience. Other optional minors include Arabic, Chinese, Gender Studies, Humanitarian Action in Practice, Migration and Global Change, Urban Evolution, Heritage and Tourism, Equitable Technologies, and Japanese, broadening interdisciplinary and international learning opportunities.
