COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) – Sustainability Engineering at Western Sydney University is a 320-credit-point program designed to equip students with the skills needed to solve modern environmental and infrastructure challenges through sustainable engineering practices. The degree begins with a 60-credit-point core that builds foundational knowledge in engineering principles such as mathematics, physics, computing, and professional practice. Students also complete 20 credit points of alternate subjects that support academic progression, particularly in mathematics and engineering readiness. The main 200-credit-point sustainability engineering major focuses on developing expertise in designing environmentally responsible systems and infrastructure. Students study a wide range of subjects including sustainable engineering fundamentals, environmental engineering, surveying, fluid mechanics, climate change science, hydraulics, sustainability analysis and design, water supply systems, wastewater systems, waste engineering, renewable energy systems, and materials selection. The curriculum also includes urban planning, climate-smart engineering, and smart and liveable cities, ensuring students understand both technical and societal aspects of sustainability. A strong emphasis is placed on real-world application through two major final-year engineering projects that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical problem-solving. Overall, the program prepares graduates to design and implement sustainable solutions for water, energy, infrastructure, and urban systems, enabling careers in environmental engineering, renewable energy, infrastructure planning, and climate-focused engineering industries.
