COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Western Sydney University is a 320-credit-point program designed to prepare students for a professional career as secondary school teachers. The degree combines strong academic study, professional experience, and specialised subject knowledge to ensure graduates are classroom-ready. The core component (80 credit points) focuses on foundational education studies including sociology for educators, educational psychology, literacy and numeracy development, inclusive education, ICT in teaching, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. These subjects develop essential pedagogical knowledge and teaching skills. The program also includes 40 credit points of structured professional experience, where students complete four progressive school placements that build practical teaching competence from classroom observation to full teaching responsibility. A major feature of the degree is the 160-credit-point Secondary Education Majors component, where students select two teaching areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, PDHPE, Business, or Technology and Applied Studies. This allows students to specialise in one or two key learning areas and develop strong subject expertise. The remaining 40 credit points are allocated to electives or an additional teaching minor, enabling further specialisation such as inclusive education or additional subject areas. Overall, the program integrates theory, practice, and subject expertise to prepare graduates for teaching careers in secondary schools across Australia, aligned with NESA accreditation and professional teaching standards.
