COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) at Western Sydney University is a 320-credit-point program designed to prepare future educators for teaching children from birth to 5 years through a strong combination of theory, pedagogy, and professional practice. The 280-credit-point core forms the main structure of the degree and covers a wide range of early childhood education areas, including literacy and numeracy for educators, contemporary childhood studies, digital childhoods, inclusive education, learning through play, pedagogy and responsive teaching practices, and curriculum areas such as science, mathematics, arts, and early literacies. Students also study leadership, ethical futures, community engagement, and educational administration to develop a strong professional identity as early childhood teachers. Key practice-based subjects such as Professional Practice Birth–3 Years and Professional Practice 3–5 Years provide essential real-world teaching experience. Additional core subjects support foundational knowledge in child development, pedagogy, diversity, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, and health and wellbeing in early childhood. Students who have not completed a relevant diploma must undertake an additional 80-credit-point foundational block covering essential introductory education subjects. The program also includes 40 credit points of electives, allowing students to pursue a minor such as English, Linguistics, or Child and Community studies, or broaden their academic interests. Overall, the degree builds strong teaching capability for early childhood education settings.
