COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Criminology at Western Sydney University is a 240-credit-point program designed to provide students with a deep and structured understanding of crime, justice systems, and their impact on society. The core component consists of 180 credit points and follows a recommended sequence of subjects that build knowledge progressively across criminology, sociology, law, and social science disciplines. Students begin with foundational subjects such as The Individual in Society, Understanding Society, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and Crime, Deviance and Society, which introduce key concepts in social analysis and justice studies. The curriculum also includes important perspectives on Indigenous Australia, social difference, and mental health in the community, ensuring students understand crime in diverse social contexts. As they advance, students explore specialised areas such as Youth Justice and Practice, Crime Prevention and Drugs, Gender, Crime and Violence, Crime, Media, Culture, and Prisons, Punishment and Criminal Justice. The program also develops research and analytical skills through Applied Social Research, Perspectives in Criminology, and Contemporary Social Issues and Professional Practice. The remaining 60 credit points are elective subjects, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests.
