COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) at Victoria University is a 192-credit-point postgraduate program designed to prepare graduates for a professional career as secondary school teachers. The course is structured around 168 credit points of core studies and 24 credit points of capstone studies, with key units focused on educational theory, teaching practice, and professional development. Core units include Indigenous Perspectives in Learning and Teaching, Curriculum and Multi-modal Learning, Literacy and Numeracy in Secondary Education, Inclusive Education, Professional Practice and Student Wellbeing, Research Methods in Education, and Approaches to Teaching and Learning. Students also complete specialised curriculum and pedagogy units aligned with their chosen teaching discipline, as well as assessment and reporting and curriculum innovation units. A strong emphasis is placed on practical experience, with students required to complete 60 days of supervised practicum in secondary school settings, allowing them to apply their learning in real classrooms. The course also includes capstone units such as Engaging with the Profession and a Capstone Research Investigation, which are completed toward the end of the program to demonstrate advanced understanding and teaching capability. Additionally, students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) to graduate. Overall, the program blends theory, research, and hands-on teaching practice to develop confident, classroom-ready educators.
