COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Youth Work at Victoria University is a 288-credit-point program designed to develop professional skills for working with young people in diverse community and support settings. The course is structured entirely around core studies, including a 24-credit-point capstone, spread across three years of progressive learning. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through units such as Youth Work Practice, Young People in a Global Community, Aboriginal History and Political Movements, Applied Human Rights, Principles of Youth Participation, Youth and Community Contexts, and Youth and Community Programs. The second year focuses on applied practice and specialised understanding, including ethics in youth work, holistic practice with young people, professional practice placements, youth policy, disability and ableism, substance use, and rights and advocacy. Students also explore community justice and social change while continuing to build practical experience. In the third year, the emphasis shifts to advanced professional preparation, including research in the community, supporting young people with complex needs, dual diagnosis settings, professional collaboration, and industry preparation, along with a major industry placement. The program also includes studies in digital life and learning to support modern youth engagement. Overall, the degree integrates theory, ethics, and extensive field experience to prepare graduates for careers in youth services, community organisations, advocacy roles, and social support work with young people.
