COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Midwifery/Bachelor of Nursing at Victoria University is a 384-credit-point integrated double degree designed to prepare students for dual registration as both registered nurses and registered midwives. The course is structured over four years and combines theoretical learning with extensive clinical practice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through subjects such as Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Foundations of Midwifery, Foundations in Nursing, Primary Health Care Across the Lifespan, and initial professional practice experience units. The second year strengthens clinical understanding with studies in pathophysiology, medications for midwives, contemporary nursing practice, Indigenous health and wellbeing, research and evidence-based practice, and supervised nursing placement experiences. In the third year, students progress to more advanced midwifery and nursing content, including care for complex childbearing needs, mental health nursing, women’s health, and multiple midwifery and nursing practice placements in real healthcare environments. The final year focuses on transition to professional practice, specialty nursing areas, complex care, and consolidation of clinical skills through extended placements in both midwifery and nursing settings. Across the program, students gain significant hands-on experience in hospitals and healthcare services, ensuring they are work-ready. Overall, the degree develops highly skilled healthcare professionals capable of delivering safe, evidence-based, and person-centred care across nursing and midwifery practice.
