COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laws at Victoria University is a 384-credit-point professional degree structured to build comprehensive legal knowledge, practical skills, and professional readiness across four years of study. The program includes 96 credit points of first-year core studies, 132 credit points of professional core units, 108 credit points of law electives, and 48 credit points of non-law electives, allowing students both depth and flexibility in their learning. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational legal concepts through units such as the Australian Legal System in Context, Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, Legal Research Methods, Legal Writing and Drafting, Legal Interpretation, and Criminal Investigation, Procedure and Sentencing. The second year develops core legal knowledge in areas including Real Property Law, Corporations Law, Constitutional Law, and Commercial Law, alongside elective study. In the third year, students focus on advanced legal subjects such as Administrative Law, Equity and Trusts, and Lawyers’ Ethics and Professional Responsibility, while also completing significant elective units. The final year emphasises professional practice through Evidence, Civil Procedure, Interviewing and Advocacy, and Internships and Law Practice, preparing students for real-world legal work. Across the program, students can specialise through a wide range of electives including Human Rights Law, Taxation Law, Migration Law, Intellectual Property, and International Law. Overall, the degree combines theoretical grounding with practical training to prepare graduates for diverse legal careers.
