COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Community Development at Victoria University consists of 288 credit points that combine foundational studies, professional core subjects, and capstone experiences to prepare students for meaningful careers in community services and social development. The course begins with first-year core units that introduce students to community development, youth studies, Aboriginal history and political movements, human rights, communication in the digital age, and global environmental issues. Students develop critical thinking and practical skills needed to work effectively within diverse community settings and human service organisations. As the program progresses, students explore advanced topics such as holistic practice with young people, project design and implementation, social justice, gender in public life, migration and globalisation, conflict resolution, and management within non-government organisations. The curriculum also places strong emphasis on Aboriginal perspectives, reflective learning, and culturally informed practices through specialised Indigenous-focused units. Students gain valuable practical experience through professional practice, industry preparation, and community placement units that allow them to apply their knowledge in real-world environments. Research and community organising subjects further strengthen students’ leadership and advocacy capabilities. Overall, the course combines academic learning with hands-on professional experience to prepare graduates for careers in community development, youth work, advocacy, social justice, and community engagement, while promoting ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible practice.
