COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a 96-credit-point postgraduate program designed for graduates from non-teaching backgrounds who wish to become qualified secondary school teachers for Years 7 to 12. The program is structured over two full-time years, with 48 credit points completed in Year 1 and 48 credit points in Year 2. In Year 1, students focus on foundational studies in education theory, pedagogy, adolescent development, curriculum design, and classroom management. They also begin developing knowledge in their chosen teaching specialisations such as English, Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts, or Humanities and Social Sciences. Early professional experience placements are introduced within the first month of the course, allowing students to observe classrooms and gradually participate in teaching activities. In Year 2, students progress to more advanced pedagogical studies and specialised subject teaching methods, with a stronger focus on lesson planning, assessment strategies, differentiation, and inclusive education practices. A major component of the program is professional experience (PEX), where students complete at least 60 days of supervised teaching practice in secondary school settings. These placements provide hands-on experience in managing classrooms, delivering lessons, and engaging with diverse student groups, including opportunities in rural or remote schools in New South Wales. Overall, the program integrates academic learning with extensive practical experience to prepare graduates as confident, capable, and professionally qualified secondary school teachers ready for registration and employment.
