COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Medical Biotechnology at the University of Wollongong is a 96-credit-point postgraduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills in molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology applications in medicine and related fields. The course is structured over two years, beginning with 48 credit points in Year 1. In the Autumn session, students study core subjects such as Principles of Biochemistry (BIOL813), Fundamentals of Science Communication (SMAH801), Fundamentals of Science Data, IT and Emerging Technologies (SMAH803), and Responsible Research (RESH802). In the Spring session, students continue with Introductory Genetics (BIOL815), Organisational Behaviour and Management (MGNT803), Perspectives in Science, and Critical Thinking and Innovation in Science. In Year 2, students advance to more specialised learning, including Global Perspectives in Science (SMAH910) and Biotechnology (BIOL980), along with a management elective such as project management or organisational studies. The final year also includes a major capstone or research component, where students choose between a research project, literature review, or advanced applied subjects such as infection and immunity or applied bioinformatics, depending on their performance and interests. The program also allows elective choices from management subjects to enhance professional and organisational skills. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology companies, healthcare innovation, and scientific research organisations where expertise in molecular biology and biotechnology is essential.
