COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of International Relations Extension with a specialisation in Maritime Security and Policy at the University of Wollongong is a 96-credit-point postgraduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge of global affairs, international policy, and maritime security issues. The course structure includes 12 credit points of core subjects, 24 credit points in Foundations of International Relations, and 60 credit points of electives, giving students significant flexibility to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals. As part of the elective component, students may complete the Maritime Security and Policy specialisation (MAJ44303), which consists of 24 credit points focused on maritime governance, security challenges, strategic policy, international law, naval affairs, trade routes, and the geopolitical importance of oceans and maritime regions. Students also complete at least 12 credit points of designated capstone subjects, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world international and policy challenges through advanced research and analysis. The program develops critical thinking, policy evaluation, research, communication, and problem-solving skills that are highly valued in international and government sectors. By combining international relations theory with specialised maritime policy knowledge, graduates are prepared for careers in government departments, defence and security organisations, international agencies, policy think tanks, maritime authorities, research institutions, and non-government organisations where expertise in global security and maritime affairs is increasingly important.
