COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Wollongong is a 96-credit-point postgraduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in earth system science, environmental studies, and related interdisciplinary fields. The course is structured over two years and combines core subjects, elective choices, and research or capstone options. In Year 1, students complete foundational core subjects such as science communication, data and emerging technologies, responsible research, critical thinking, and science innovation, along with discipline-specific subjects from areas like ecology, geology, geospatial analysis, climate change, or environmental management. Students also gain exposure to management and workplace-related subjects to strengthen professional and organisational skills. In Year 2, students advance to more specialised study, including global science perspectives, higher-level environmental or earth science subjects, and management electives such as organisational behaviour, project management, or workplace health and safety. The final semester focuses on either a major research project or alternative capstone pathway depending on academic performance, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real scientific or environmental problems. The program is flexible, offering streams based on academic performance, and supports both research-focused and industry-focused career pathways. Overall, it prepares graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, research, sustainability, conservation, resource management, and further academic study in earth and environmental sciences.
