COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the University of Wollongong is a four-year, 192 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for advanced professional practice and research in social work. The program combines academic study, field education, and an honours-level research component. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in behavioural science, social work practice, sociology, politics, Indigenous studies, and social determinants of health, along with electives that broaden their understanding of social issues. In the second year, students develop deeper knowledge of social policy, human development, welfare systems, research methods, social justice, law, and core practice skills for working with individuals, families, and groups. The third year focuses on advanced social work theory and applied practice, including ethics, mental health, children and families, disability, ageing, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practice, alongside a major supervised professional placement. In the fourth year, students undertake honours-level study, including a dedicated social work research project, advanced practice subjects, and further professional placements. Key subjects include community work, social advocacy, and advanced practice in social work, along with a second supervised placement. The program places strong emphasis on critical thinking, ethical practice, and research capability, particularly in the honours research component. Overall, it prepares graduates for advanced professional roles in social work, leadership positions, and pathways to postgraduate research or doctoral study, while maintaining a strong focus on social justice and community wellbeing.
