COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Sociology is a 144 credit point undergraduate degree designed to provide students with a strong understanding of how societies function, change, and shape human behaviour. The program is completed over three years, with students undertaking 48 credit points in each year. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational social science concepts such as sociology, psychology, politics, and research methods, which help them understand how individuals and institutions interact within society. In the second year, students build on this foundation by studying more specialised sociological topics, including social theory, inequality, globalisation, identity, and social structures that influence everyday life. In the third year, students engage with advanced sociology subjects that explore power, stratification, social movements, culture, sexuality, and institutional systems, while also developing strong research and analytical skills. The Sociology major (MAJ40177) consists of 48 credit points and focuses on examining social life, cultural change, and the causes and consequences of human behaviour in diverse contexts. Students develop the ability to critically analyse social problems and understand issues such as inequality, diversity, and social justice. Throughout the degree, students gain skills in research, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in community services, government, policy, advocacy, and research, as well as providing a pathway to further study in sociology and related social sciences.
