COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Environment and Society is a 144 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students to understand and address complex environmental and social challenges. The program is completed over three years, with students undertaking 48 credit points in each year. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational social science concepts, including sociology, politics, and research methods, which help them understand how societies function and how environmental and social issues are connected. In the second year, students build on this foundation by exploring more specialised topics related to environment-society interactions, including environmental justice, sustainability, and social inequality. In the third year, students engage with advanced subjects that focus on policy analysis, environmental governance, and applied social research, developing strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The Environment and Society major (MAJ44313) consists of 48 credit points and examines how environmental issues such as climate change, resource use, and natural disasters intersect with social structures and human behaviour. Students study topics such as environmental justice, Indigenous perspectives, urban planning, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. The program emphasises practical skills in research, community engagement, policy development, and communication. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in environmental policy, planning, sustainability, community development, and advocacy, while also providing a pathway to further study in social science and environmental fields.
