COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology) is a 144 credit point undergraduate degree designed to provide students with a strong understanding of society, social issues, and the criminal justice system. The program is completed over three years, with students undertaking 48 credit points in each year. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in social science, including sociology, politics, and research methods, which help them understand how societies function and how social problems develop. In the second year, students build on this foundation by studying more specialised topics related to crime, justice, and social inequality, while also developing strong analytical and research skills. In the third year, students engage with advanced criminology and social science subjects that explore crime theory, justice systems, policy responses, and real-world social issues. The Criminology major (MAJ40159) consists of 48 credit points and focuses on understanding why crime occurs, how societies define and respond to it, and how justice systems operate. Students examine areas such as youth crime, environmental crime, policing, victimisation, and restorative justice, while also learning research methods used in social science. The program provides opportunities to apply knowledge to real-world issues and may include electives that broaden understanding of related disciplines.
