COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Secondary Education with a major in Physics is a 192 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for careers as qualified secondary school physics teachers. The program is completed over four years, with students undertaking 48 credit points in each year. Throughout the degree, students develop strong knowledge of physics alongside the professional skills required for effective teaching in secondary schools. In the first year, students build foundational understanding in science and education, gaining introductory knowledge in physics concepts as well as learning principles related to teaching and learning. In the second and third years, students progress into more advanced physics topics such as mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, thermodynamics, and modern physics, while also studying education subjects including psychology, adolescent development, classroom management, inclusive education, Aboriginal education, and teaching pedagogy. The Physics major (MAJ44298) consists of 72 credit points and forms the primary teaching area within the degree. In the fourth year, students complete advanced coursework and extensive professional experience placements in schools, where they apply their knowledge in real classroom environments and develop practical teaching skills. The program emphasises hands-on learning, curriculum design, and assessment strategies. Students may also have opportunities for rural and international placements. Overall, the degree prepares graduates with strong physics expertise and professional teaching capabilities required for successful careers in secondary education.
