COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Secondary Education with a major in Modern History is a 192 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for careers as qualified secondary school history teachers. The program is completed over four years, with students undertaking 48 credit points in each year. Throughout the degree, students develop a strong understanding of historical events, societies, and ideas while gaining the professional knowledge and practical skills required for effective teaching. In the early years, students build foundational knowledge in history and education, studying topics that develop historical inquiry, critical thinking, research, and communication skills. As they progress, students explore modern history from the medieval period to contemporary times, examining political, social, cultural, and economic developments that have shaped the modern world. The Modern History major (MAJ44325) consists of 54 credit points and serves as the primary teaching area within the degree. Alongside history studies, students complete professional education subjects covering psychology, adolescent development, curriculum design, classroom management, inclusive education, Aboriginal education, educational technology, and teaching pedagogy. Practical experience is a major component of the program, with extensive professional placements in schools enabling students to apply their learning in real classroom settings. Opportunities for rural and international placements may also be available.
