COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Secondary Education with a major in Mathematics is a 192 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for careers as qualified secondary school mathematics teachers. The program is completed over four years, with students undertaking 48 credit points each year. Throughout the degree, students develop advanced mathematical knowledge alongside the professional skills required for effective teaching. In the first year, students build a foundation in mathematics and education, gaining essential knowledge in mathematical concepts and learning processes. During the second and third years, students study more specialised mathematics subjects, including calculus, algebra, statistics, and mathematical modelling, while also developing expertise in curriculum design, assessment, classroom management, and teaching strategies. The Mathematics major (MAJ44294) consists of 66 credit points and serves as the primary teaching area within the degree, providing the subject knowledge necessary to teach mathematics confidently at the secondary school level. In the fourth year, students complete advanced education studies and extensive professional experience placements in schools, where they apply their learning in real classroom environments and further refine their teaching skills. The program also includes studies in psychology, adolescent development, inclusive education, Aboriginal education, and professional practice. Students may have opportunities for rural and international placements as well.
