COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Secondary Education with a major in Chemistry is a 192 credit point undergraduate degree designed to prepare students to become qualified secondary school chemistry teachers. The program is structured over four years, with students completing 48 credit points in each year. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in science and education, gaining an introduction to chemistry along with key concepts in teaching and learning. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of chemistry while also studying education subjects such as psychology, adolescent development, inclusive education, classroom management, and Aboriginal education. In the third year, students focus more on advanced chemistry topics alongside pedagogical training, learning how to design lessons, assess student learning, and apply effective teaching strategies in science classrooms. In the fourth year, students complete advanced studies and extensive professional experience placements in schools, where they apply their knowledge in real classroom environments and develop confidence as teachers. The Chemistry major (MAJ44296) consists of 66 credit points and covers core areas such as organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, supported by practical laboratory work. The program strongly emphasises real-world teaching practice through school placements, including rural and international opportunities. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers as secondary school chemistry teachers with strong subject expertise and professional teaching skills.
