COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry is a 144 credit point undergraduate degree designed to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical sciences and their broad applications across multiple disciplines. The program is structured over three years, beginning with a first year of 48 credit points that introduces core scientific principles and develops essential knowledge in chemistry, mathematics, and related sciences. In this stage, students build fundamental laboratory skills and gain a clear understanding of key scientific concepts required for advanced study. In the second and third years, students complete 108 credit points of specialised chemistry study as part of the Chemistry major (MAJ40217), where they explore core areas such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry. The major also emphasises the use of modern laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and data analysis methods to solve complex scientific problems. Students develop strong practical skills through hands-on laboratory classes in purpose-built science facilities at the Wollongong campus. In the final year, students undertake more advanced and applied learning, which may include research-focused activities addressing real-world issues such as environmental analysis or materials chemistry. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in chemical industries, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and research organisations, while also providing a strong pathway to honours and postgraduate study in chemistry and related scientific fields.
