COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Early Years) (Honours) is a 192-credit-point program designed to prepare students for advanced professional practice and research in early childhood education. The degree is structured over four years, with each year building progressively on knowledge, skills, and practical experience in teaching children from birth to five years. In Year 1, students study foundational subjects such as early childhood contexts, play and pedagogy, language and literacy, creative arts education, and observational techniques to understand how young children learn and develop. Year 2 focuses on child development, curriculum planning, inclusion, STEM education, health and wellbeing, and learning environments, strengthening students’ ability to design effective early learning experiences. Year 3 deepens professional understanding through subjects on community contexts, early intervention, Aboriginal education, management, and advanced research methods, alongside pedagogy for birth to three-year-old children. In Year 4, students complete an honours research thesis while also studying leadership, advocacy, contemporary theories, language enrichment, and transition-to-school practices, preparing them for both academic and professional advancement. The program integrates strong practical and theoretical learning, including professional experience placements and mentoring through early childhood settings. Graduates develop advanced teaching, leadership, and research skills, enabling careers in early childhood education, policy, leadership roles, and further postgraduate study, with a strong focus on improving outcomes for children, families, and communities.
