COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts major) at the University of Wollongong is a 144-credit point undergraduate program designed to develop students as skilled, independent, and critically engaged visual artists. The degree is structured over three years of full-time study, with 48 credit points completed in each year. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational studio practices and essential visual art skills, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and other 2D and 3D processes. This stage focuses on developing technical ability, creative experimentation, and an understanding of basic artistic principles. In the second year, students expand their studio practice by working across a broader range of media such as ceramics, textiles, photography, and installation art. They also begin to develop stronger conceptual thinking and situate their work within historical and contemporary art contexts. In the third year, students undertake advanced studio-based projects, refining their individual artistic practice and producing a professional body of work suitable for exhibition and portfolio development. Throughout the degree, students also engage in art history and theory, which helps them understand the cultural, social, and global contexts of visual arts practice. Teaching is delivered through studio workshops, critiques, lectures, and independent projects guided by experienced artists and academics. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers as visual artists, curators, gallery professionals, designers, and creative industry practitioners, while fostering innovation, critical thinking, and professional artistic practice.
