COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Dean’s Scholar) with a Cyber Security major at the University of Wollongong is a 144-credit point advanced undergraduate degree designed for high-achieving students seeking strong technical expertise and an academic pathway that encourages honours and research study. The program is structured across core computer science subjects, core selection subjects, a Dean’s Scholar component, a capstone project, and a specialised cyber security major. Students complete 78 credit points of core subjects that provide a solid foundation in programming, problem solving, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, networking, databases, web technologies, systems analysis, human–computer interaction, and project management. These subjects build essential technical and analytical skills required for advanced computing and security-focused study. In addition, students complete 6 credit points of core selection subjects, allowing limited flexibility in related computing areas. A further 6-credit point Dean’s Scholar component is included to support academic excellence, deeper analytical learning, and preparation for honours or research pathways. Students also undertake a 12-credit point capstone annual project in their final year, working in teams to solve real-world computing and cyber security problems using industry-style methods. The 24-credit point Cyber Security major focuses on protecting digital systems and networks, covering systems security, network security, Internet of Things (IoT) security, blockchain technologies, reverse engineering, penetration testing, and ethical hacking. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in cyber security, information security, ethical hacking, and advanced IT roles, as well as postgraduate research opportunities.
