COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Dean’s Scholar) with a Cyber Security major at the University of Wollongong is a 144-credit point advanced undergraduate degree designed for high-achieving students seeking strong technical expertise and research-focused learning in computing and cyber defence. The program includes 78 credit points of core subjects that build essential foundations in programming, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, networking, databases, software development, systems analysis, and human–computer interaction. These core subjects ensure students develop strong problem-solving and technical skills required for advanced cyber security study. Students also complete 6 credit points of core selection subjects, allowing limited flexibility to explore related computing areas. A key feature of the Dean’s Scholar pathway is the 6-credit point Dean’s Scholar component, which encourages deeper academic engagement, analytical thinking, and preparation for honours or research study. In addition, students undertake a 12-credit point capstone annual project in their final year, where they work in teams to solve real-world computing and security problems, applying industry-style practices and technical knowledge. The 24-credit point Cyber Security major focuses on protecting digital systems and networks, covering topics such as systems security, network security, Internet of Things (IoT) security, blockchain technologies, reverse engineering, penetration testing, and ethical hacking. Students learn how to identify vulnerabilities and defend against cyber threats across different environments. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in cyber security, ethical hacking, information security, and advanced IT roles, while also providing a pathway to honours and postgraduate research studies.
