COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Communication and Media (Journalism) at the University of Wollongong is a 144-credit point undergraduate degree designed to develop practical journalism, multimedia storytelling, and communication skills over three years of full-time study. The curriculum begins with foundational core subjects in communication and media, where students learn essential concepts in media industries, digital communication, storytelling, and content creation. As the degree progresses, students specialise in the Journalism major, which focuses on reporting, news writing, interviewing, multimedia production, and cross-platform publishing. Students gain hands-on experience in television, radio, podcasting, and online journalism through participation in platforms such as UOWTV and RadioU, where they collaborate with peers to research, produce, and publish stories. The program also explores the changing role of journalism in democratic societies, covering important topics such as media ethics, media law, investigative journalism, and digital news practices. Students learn how emerging technologies and evolving storytelling formats are transforming the media landscape and audience engagement. Alongside journalism subjects, students complete a minor and elective subjects that allow them to broaden their expertise in related communication or media areas. In the final stage of the degree, students undertake advanced practical projects and professional learning experiences that help them build a portfolio of published work.
