COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation at the University of Wollongong is a 144-credit point undergraduate degree designed to be completed over three years of full-time study. The program combines a structured core curriculum with a Liberal Arts major and a second major of the student’s choice, providing both depth and breadth of learning. The core component consists of 48 credit points spread across three years and focuses on the study of classical and influential works across Western intellectual and cultural history. In the first year, students study ancient Greek and Roman classics along with aesthetics in Western art and architecture. In the second year, they explore medieval, Renaissance, and Enlightenment texts and ideas. In the third year, the focus shifts to modern intellectual traditions and the philosophy of democracy in Britain, America, and Australia. Alongside this core sequence, students complete a 48-credit point Liberal Arts major that develops critical thinking through engagement with fundamental questions about truth, knowledge, virtue, and society. In addition, students select a second 48-credit point major from disciplines such as English Literatures, History, International Relations, Politics, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, Philosophy, Creative Writing, or Global Sustainable Development. This flexible structure allows students to combine classical intellectual training with a specialised academic field, preparing them for analytical, research-based, and communication-focused careers.
