COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure of Science Communication at UWA is divided into conversion units, core units, and option units, designed to build both foundational knowledge and advanced professional skills in communicating science. Students without prior studies in science communication or a related minor may need to complete up to 24 credit points of conversion units, which introduce essential skills such as ethical scientific communication, science writing, presentations, and exhibitions. These units ensure that all students begin the program with a common understanding of how to communicate scientific ideas effectively. The core component consists of 36 credit points and includes subjects such as strategic communication in the digital era, science and society, professional scientific skills, citizen science, research literature analysis, and policy-related communication, helping students understand how science interacts with society, media, and decision-making. In addition, students complete either a practicum or internship unit to gain practical industry experience. For the dissertation pathway, students complete a structured research project through multiple dissertation units along with research skills training, allowing deeper academic investigation into science communication topics. Alternatively, the coursework pathway offers a broader selection of electives from areas such as journalism, media studies, education, public health, politics, and interdisciplinary studies. Overall, the structure combines theory, applied practice, and research flexibility to prepare graduates for diverse communication roles in science-related fields.
