COURSE CURRICULUM

The Public Health Methodology specialisation within the Master of Public Health is designed for students who want to develop advanced analytical, research, and methodological skills for careers in public health research, policy, and evidence-based practice. The curriculum combines foundational public health subjects with specialised training in research methods, statistics, and data analysis. Students complete core units in epidemiology, health program evaluation, foundations of public health, and health promotion, providing a broad understanding of disease patterns, public health systems, and strategies for improving population health. In addition, the specialisation includes compulsory studies in Biostatistics I, Health Systems and Economics, and Qualitative Research Methods in Health, helping students gain expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. A major component of this pathway is the dissertation, where students undertake supervised original research either full-time or part-time, allowing them to develop skills in formulating research questions, reviewing scientific literature, analysing data, and presenting findings at a professional level. Students can further customise their studies through optional coursework units in areas such as clinical epidemiology, communicable diseases, advanced biostatistics, linked health data analysis, global health, environmental health, nutrition, and health leadership. A practicum option is also available to provide industry-based experience. Overall, the program emphasises research capability, methodological expertise, and practical public health application.
