COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Public Health specialisation within the Master of Public Health is designed to provide students with practical public health knowledge, research capability, and workplace experience relevant to real-world health systems and population health challenges. The program combines compulsory core units, specialised applied public health subjects, and optional coursework or dissertation pathways. Students complete core studies in epidemiology, health program evaluation, foundations of public health, and health promotion, building essential skills in understanding disease patterns, evaluating public health programs, and designing strategies to improve community health outcomes. The specialisation also includes Biostatistics I, Health Systems and Economics, Qualitative Research Methods in Health, and a substantial Public Health Practicum, which gives students direct industry experience and the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings. In addition, students choose further units from a broad selection covering areas such as environmental and occupational health, communicable disease control, global health, child and maternal health, advanced biostatistics, food and nutrition in population health, health leadership, and healthcare economics. Students may also undertake internships or specialised urban health studies. For those interested in research, an optional dissertation pathway allows students to complete supervised original research through either full-time or part-time dissertation units. Overall, the curriculum integrates academic learning, professional practice, and research training to prepare graduates for advanced roles in public health practice, policy, and research.
