COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Professional Engineering (Biomedical Engineering specialisation) is designed to develop advanced engineering knowledge, technical skills, and research capability for careers in healthcare technology, medical devices, and biomedical innovation. The core component includes essential professional engineering units such as Professional Engineering Portfolio, Project Management and Engineering Practice, Risk, Reliability and Safety, and a two-part Engineering Research Project, which together build strong foundations in engineering practice, safety, and applied research. The biomedical specialisation focuses on applying engineering principles to biological and medical systems through subjects such as Biomedical Instrumentation, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Advanced Topics in Biomedical Engineering, and a two-part Biomedical Engineering Design Project. Students also study supporting technical areas including Measurement and Noise, Medical Imaging Physics, and Materials Characterisation for Bioengineering, which help them understand how engineering solutions are applied in healthcare and medical technologies. In addition, students select elective units from areas such as big data in biology, bioinformatics and genomics, computer vision, control engineering, numerical modelling, biostatistics, global challenges in biomedical science, innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialisation. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies toward clinical, research, or industry-focused career paths. Overall, the curriculum integrates engineering fundamentals, biomedical science, research training, and innovation, preparing graduates for professional roles in medical technology development, healthcare engineering, research institutions, and biomedical industry sectors.
