COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Professions Education course at UWA is structured to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in teaching, assessment, and research within healthcare education. The core component consists of 18 credit points and includes three compulsory units: Principles of Teaching and Learning, Principles of Assessment and Evaluation, and Introduction to Research in Health Professions Education. These units provide a strong foundation in educational theory, learner-centred teaching strategies, assessment design, and research methods relevant to health professions training. Students then select additional units worth 6 credit points from Group A or Group B, allowing them to explore specialised areas such as clinical teaching and supervision, simulation-based learning, interprofessional education, program evaluation, professional portfolio development, educational leadership, and health humanities. Group B options also include broader education and health-related subjects such as pedagogy and technology integration, curriculum improvement, educational research analysis, qualitative research methods, and health leadership and management. For students pursuing a research-intensive pathway, Group C offers a major thesis option worth 72 credit points, available in full-time or part-time formats, enabling in-depth investigation into a chosen topic in health professions education. Overall, the curriculum combines teaching practice, assessment strategies, educational leadership, and research training to prepare healthcare professionals for academic, clinical teaching, and leadership roles in health education settings.
