COURSE CURRICULUM

The Zoology major within the Bachelor of Science at The University of Western Australia is structured to build strong foundations in biological sciences and progressively develop advanced understanding of animal biology, ecology, and evolution. In Level 1, students begin with core units such as Frontiers in Biology, Plant and Animal Biology, Science, Society and Data Analysis, and Communicating Science, which introduce key biological concepts along with scientific communication and analytical skills. Students who have not met the required Mathematics background complete bridging units like Mathematics Fundamentals or Analytical Methods for Scientists to ensure readiness for higher-level study. In Level 2, students study core subjects including Animal Form and Function and Animal Diversity, while also choosing electives such as Field Studies in Zoology, Ecology, or Principles of Inheritance to gain practical and theoretical knowledge. In Level 3, the program becomes more specialized with advanced units including Animal Ecology, Environmental Physiology, Behavioural Ecology, and Evolutionary Processes, focusing on how animals interact with their environment and evolve over time. This structured curriculum combines classroom learning, laboratory work, and field-based studies, preparing students for careers in wildlife research, conservation, environmental management, and further postgraduate study in biological sciences.
