COURSE CURRICULUM

The Microbiology and Immunology course is structured across three levels to build a strong foundation in biological sciences and progressively develop specialised knowledge in microbes, infectious diseases, and immune system function. In Level 1, students complete core introductory units including BIOL1130 Frontiers in Biology (6 points), which introduces key concepts in modern biology, and SCIE1106 Molecular Biology of the Cell (6 points), which focuses on cellular structure, function, and molecular processes. Depending on prior preparation, students may also complete bridging units such as CHEM1003 Introductory Chemistry (6 points) or MATH1720 Mathematics Fundamentals (6 points) to strengthen essential scientific skills. In Level 2, students progress to core discipline units including MICR2208 Introductory Microbiology (6 points), which explores microorganisms and their roles in different environments, and MICR2209 Introduction to Infectious Diseases and Immunology (6 points), which examines how infections develop and how the immune system responds. In Level 3, students undertake advanced study through MICR3305 Immunobiology and Immune Diseases (6 points), MICR3310 Microbial Ecology and One Health (6 points), MICR3320 Viruses and Viral Disease (6 points), and MICR3330 Bacteria and Bacterial Disease (6 points), which provide in-depth knowledge of microbial systems and disease processes. This structure prepares students for careers in biomedical science, research, healthcare, and public health.
