COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Biology major is structured across three levels, combining biological sciences, environmental studies, and earth system science to provide a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystems. At Level 1, students complete core foundational units including Frontiers in Biology, Plant and Animal Biology, Dynamic Planet, and Science, Society and Data Analysis, which introduce essential concepts in biology, earth science, and scientific reasoning. Bridging units in mathematics or chemistry may also be required for students needing additional preparation. At Level 2, students focus on marine and environmental systems through Marine Biology, Global Climate Change and Biodiversity, Ecology, and Marine Systems, which explore ocean life, ecosystem interactions, and the impact of environmental change on biodiversity. At Level 3, students undertake advanced study in Fisheries Science: Foundation and Application, Coastal Conservation and Management, Oceanography, and Field Techniques in Marine Science. These units provide specialised knowledge in marine ecosystems, resource management, and practical fieldwork skills. Across all levels, the course integrates theory, laboratory work, and field-based learning to develop strong analytical and research abilities. Overall, the major prepares students for careers in marine science, environmental conservation, fisheries management, oceanography, and related scientific and sustainability-focused fields.
