COURSE CURRICULUM

The Earth Sciences major is structured across three progressive levels, providing students with a strong foundation in geology, Earth systems, and environmental processes. At Level 1, students complete core introductory units including EART1104 Discovering Earth, EART1105 Dynamic Planet, SCIE1104 Science, Society and Data Analysis, and SCOM1101 Communicating Science, which build essential knowledge in Earth science concepts, scientific thinking, and communication skills. Bridging units such as MATH1720 Mathematics Fundamentals, MATH1721 Mathematics Foundations: Methods, and SCIE1500 Analytical Methods for Scientists are available for students requiring additional preparation in mathematics or analytical methods. At Level 2, students study core units EART2231 Earth Materials, EART2232 Field Geology, and EART2234 Earth Processes, which introduce key geological materials, field techniques, and dynamic Earth systems. They also choose an elective from EART2204 Coastal Processes or ENVT2251 Hydrology and Water Resource Management to broaden their understanding of environmental systems. At Level 3, students undertake advanced study through EART3342 Geochemistry and Petrology, EART3343 Structural Geology and Tectonics, EART3344 Basin Analysis, and EART3353 Geological Mapping, developing specialised skills in interpreting geological structures and Earth processes. Overall, the course combines theory, practical fieldwork, and analytical training, preparing graduates for careers in geology, environmental science, resource exploration, and Earth system research.
